Summer Fun with the Team – It’s All About Bikes!
The PSIA-AASI National Team members are staying active this summer, building everything from pools to houses, and spending lots of time on their bikes.
Biking is Big
“For me, it is all about the bikes in the summer,” said PSIA Alpine Team member Kevin Jordan. “Bike shops are busy and the bike school at Snowmass is growing.” Kevin shared he’s also now a certified PMBIA (Professional Mountain Bike Instructor Association) Level 1 Course Conductor.
“I’ve learned a lot, and I keep learning as I help other mountain bike instructors attain their certification,” said Kevin. “Plus, I’m also applying the Learning Connection framework to my lessons.”
Spending Time on the River
PSIA-AASI Adaptive Team member Christina Bruno said, “I’ve been doing a lot of mountain biking, paddle boarding, rafting.”
She and former AASI Snowboard Team Coach Scott Anfang also spent a week on the river traveling through 95 miles of the Deso Grey canyon on the Green River.
“This summer we’ve played in new stretches of river and we’re meeting new river couples, which has been really fun,” said Christina. “We also visited family that we haven’t seen since the pandemic started in both Utah and Minnesota.”
Working Summer Jobs
Since graduating in May with an Outdoor Industry MBA Christina said she has been balancing outdoor activities and career-building, “I’m actively job hunting for work that uses my degree, and in the meantime, I’m helping Scott with his business cleaning ponds, irrigation work, and gardening.”
PSIA Alpine Team member Troy Walsh is also balancing work and play in Maine, where he said, “Pool construction has been crazy busy.”
Troy said, “Days off allow me home, and get me on my bike. I wish the days on the bike came more frequently.”
Fellow alpine team member Brian Smith is also working on construction projects in New York, although the pandemic continues to throw him the occasional curveball.
“Keeping myself and five people working in today’s construction environment is different with lag times for subcontractors, shortages of products, and the insatiable demand for work,” Brian said. “Good news is most clients get it and have been adapting to it. Family is healthy therefore nothing else is as important.”
Brian said his wife, Aleks, and their girl have been riding bikes, doing a lot of swimming, and recently completed a home project that has made everyone happy. “Over the past year,” Brian said, “Aleks and I designed a fun organic garden and it’s been super productive and healthy.”
