Position title: Communications Specialist

Location: Hybrid in Denver or remote in Colorado, Idaho, Utah, or Pennsylvania

PSIA-AASI (Professional Ski Instructors of America-American Association of Snowboard Instructors) is seeking a communications specialist to support its strategic marketing and communications efforts in the spaces of member-focused publications, educational materials, website content, and email marketing.

PSIA-AASI is a nonprofit educational member association and is the world’s largest organization dedicated to skiing and snowboarding, including alpine, cross-country, telemark, and adaptive. PSIA-AASI represents ~34,000 individual members, ~300 member snowsports schools, and encompasses 8 distinct regions of the country that partner with a national office in Denver, CO. PSIA-AASI members are snowsports instructors and ski and snowboard schools seeking professional development. The organization educates, inspires, builds community, and elevates the professional instructor profile.

The ideal candidate has 2-5 years of experience in a marketing, communications, journalism, or other editorial / publication role and can demonstrate strong editing, proofreading, and marketing-focused writing skills, as well as a passion for outdoor recreation. This editing- and writing-heavy role reports to the PSIA-AASI Executive Editor and is a key part of a small team that includes the marketing and communications director, digital marketing manager, podcast host, and features writer.

Core job functions

EDITING, PROOFREADING, MAGAZINE + PUBLICATION SUPPORT (50%)

  • This position will work closely with the executive editor to copyedit, proofread, and otherwise support all print and digital publications—including 32 Degrees magazine (3 issues per year during the fall-winter-spring snowsports season for members), print and digital educational and training manuals, and other educational and promotional pieces as needed.
  • The role involves administrative work that includes but is not limited to the following:
  • Solicit technical reviews as needed, track reviewer responses, and edit submissions with authors.
  • Participate in magazine editorial planning, production meetings, design decisions, proofing process, and content distribution.
  • Acquire and track signed author and photographer agreements for each submission to be published, prior to publication.
  • Coordinate with the Executive Editor and accounting department to process contributor payments.

EMAIL MARKETING COPY (25%)

  • This position will work closely with the department director to implement email marketing strategies by drafting email marketing copy for various campaigns and audiences. This involves collaborating with multiple staff members and partners to craft compelling, impactful, and resourceful messages for distinct audiences. This is an area where the organization is looking to grow and improve.

MAINTAINING WEB COPY (25%)

  • This position will act as the lead for keeping information updated on TheSnowPros.org (which is undergoing an overhaul).
  • The focus is on writing web copy that positions the organization and its resources in a concise, compelling, welcoming, and easy-to-understand manner. This includes writing and updating page copy to promote PSIA-AASI’s events, educational materials, and other offerings such as scholarships and member resources.
  • Proofread/copyedit stories written for the website.

Other opportunities, but these are not core functions of the job

  • Supporting PR efforts and media outreach
  • Other duties as assigned

Required experience / core competencies

  • 4-year degree in communications, journalism, publishing, or marketing, or equivalent work experience.
  • 2-5 years professional experience in communications, journalism, publications, or marketing.
  • Strong copyediting, proofreading, and writing skills, including knowledge of AP Style.
  • You consider yourself detail-oriented, always check your work, and can condense lengthy pieces to get to the most impactful heart of a story, even with topics on which you are not a subject-matter expert. Comfortable self-managing long-term projects as well as reacting to tight deadlines.
  • Experience with email marketing content.
  • Experience writing for web, tailoring content to different audiences, and a basic understanding of SEO.

Preferred skillsets

  • Nonprofit or member association experience
  • Outdoor industry experience
  • Ski or snowboarding background
  • Adobe Creative Suite (specifically Photoshop)

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid in Denver or remote in Colorado, Idaho, Utah, or Pennsylvania.
  • Occasional travel may be offered to better understand PSIA-AASI’s mission and audiences but is not a significant part of this role.
  • If the chosen candidate is not in the Denver metro area, the organization will require and pay for travel to the headquarters for the annual staff retreat (usually in March).

Salary + Benefits

  • $50,000-57,000, depending on experience
