The resort ranks as one of the nation’s top winter destinations with 2900 acres of amazing terrain thanks to two massive bowls and renowned tree skiing. Located in the rugged Selkirk Mountains of the northern Idaho panhandle, and only 80 miles from Spokane, WA, Schweitzer overlooks the town of Sandpoint, ID and offers breathtaking views of three states, Canada and the impressive Lake Pend Oreille.

Today Schweitzer is a well-run regional resort. Over the past five years, Schweitzer has experienced market leading growth in skier visits and generated a growing business in the summer. The management team has put Schweitzer on solid financial footing and created a distinctive culture that informs the employee and visitor experience. The resort has exceptional terrain and lifts and the largest skiable terrain in either Washington or Idaho. Schweitzer also averages 300 plus inches of snow fall on the mountain each winter.

Schweitzer is looking for the right individual to take on the oversight and day to day operations of our growing Snowsports School operation.  Schweitzer’s growth in this department has increased dramatically over the past two years and we are looking for a passionate, experienced & motivated person to take the experience to the next level for our guests and staff. Schweitzer’s currently employs just over 100 coaches, in addition to the support team. Between the demand of private lessons, group lessons, midweek school groups and season long programs the operation is sure keep one stimulated throughout the winter.


JOB TITLE/DEPARTMENT:  Snowsports Manager

POSITION TYPE: Group 2, salaried with benefits

WAGE RANGE: DOE depending upon experience


SUPERVISED BY:  Director of Resort Services

POSITION SUMMARY: To provide inspiration, leadership, oversight, and direction to Schweitzer’s Snowsports school operation. Responsible for all facets of the operation including safety initiatives, staff scheduling, training, budgeting, and working with the sales department to provide a seamless experience for our guests.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Will contribute to the overall vision, direction and implementation of Schweitzer Snowsports School and its programs by performing the following:

  • Aligning Snowsports staff & services with company goals, financial success and development.
  • Possess the ability to work without direct supervision.
  • Oversee the operation with continuity across all departments at Schweitzer.
  • Provide leadership and daily oversight of programs, services and staff members.
  • Work with the Director of Resort Services, Rental Manager & Guest Services Manager to develop and implement programs & products.
  • Understand and implement products within the limitations of the sales system as well as train, support and supervise staff that will be using the sales/booking/scheduling software
  • Building acceptable budgets for the Snowsports School
  • Be financially accountable for all functions of the Snowsports School including adjusting labor/expenses according to business levels to match projected revenues
  • In all areas of operation, conduct business with the highest levels of guest service and safety.
  • Be responsible for overall service experience, inspire a service culture to deliver quality experiences.
  • Communicate, implement, and enforce clear and consistent guidelines for all aspects of service.
  • Organize and maintain information systems and booking protocols. Train staff to protocols
  • Directs the hiring, training, and development of the staff in all disciplines and positions
  • Monitors performance – provides feedback and coaching to the staff in the areas of teaching, guest service, work assignments, and safety. Consults with supervisors in the documentation of instructor performance and feedback.
  • Manage and oversight of the compensation for accuracy

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES: Should have extensive knowledge of Schweitzer Mountain facilities and activities. Responsibilities are listed as guidelines and the position is not necessarily limited to these items.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Responsible for up to 8 hours of combined massaging/ standing/ desk activity.  Will lift up to 40 pounds frequently and up to 80 pounds rarely.  Will bend, squat, kneel, climb, balance, feel and reach above shoulder level occasionally to frequently. Hearing, speech, sight, walking, use of hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, are required. 80% outside that is exposed to all moisture levels and temperature changes.  Hazards are ice and snow.


SKILLS: Strong and effective interpersonal skills along with a strong work ethic, Ability to inspire, prioritize and delegate. Thorough knowledge of all aspects of the Snowsports School. Excellent communication skills both oral and written; computer skills with Microsoft Office required; excellent guest service skills; detailed, accurate, and organized. Extensive knowledge of ski mechanics and teaching methods. Winter Sports enthusiast and knowledge of mountain environment preferred.

ATTRIBUTES: Professional manner, positive attitude, patient, confident, and has initiative

EDUCATION: PSIA level II or III certification preferred. A four-year degree or equivalent experience preferred.

EXPERIENCE: Relevant ski & snowboard school experience.

MACHINES, PROGRAMS AND TOOLS OPERATED: Computer; Microsoft Windows and Office including Outlook, Word, Excel, Siriusware/Accesso Sales System.
