Course Description:
The Certified Level I process consists of an assessment of basic skiing skills, teaching skills, and professional knowledge (which refers to technical and mechanical knowledge as well as to knowledge of guest service, PSIA, the ski industry, and risk management). Candidates should be prepared to lead the group through some basic ski instruction scenarios. The Telemark Level I College is three days, first day will provide coaching and feedback, day 2 and 3 will include both coaching as well as assessment activities. Please refer to the Telemark Assessment Guide and reference information for complete details. We highly recommend reviewing the National Standards.
It is also highly recommended you complete the free online "Course for New Instructors." And please remember to complete the "Telemark Level I Professional Knowledge Exam" before you register for the on snow Assessment.
Learning Experiences:
Specific activities will vary depending on the session selection, group's needs and environmental conditions and typically include:
• Practicing Level I assessment activities as well as activities to improve performance and understanding.
• Reviewing the Assessment Forms, Assessment Activities and Assessment Criteria.
• Guided group discussions.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, successful participants will be able to:
• Exhibit a basic understanding of the people-skill fundamentals, using them to develop trust within the learning environment.
• Apply the teaching-skill fundamentals, allowing them to plan and organize an engaging learning experience
• Ski competently in terrain suitable for skiers in the beginner/novice and intermediate zones.
