Course Description:

Looking to get a jump start on your snowboard instructing career, surrounded by like-minded pros? Ready to be inspired by outstanding leaders and discover new tools and ideas? Combined with Summit Academy and certification/specialist colleges, Eastern Academy gathers over 500 instructors, sponsors and leaders for five days of snowsports, education and camaraderie. Experience the biggest PSIA-AASI event in the East, if not the country!

At the Snowboard Level I College, gain an understanding of the Learning Connection Model by exploring the Technical, Teaching and People skills in the beginner/novice zone. Through on-hill practice, peer-to-peer activities, teaching scenarios and group discussions, become familiar with the format, assessment criteria and activities prior to completing a Level 1 Assessment at the end of the week.

Participants can expect the following format:

• Day 1-3: Participants are led through on-snow, educational content by an Eastern Education Staff member to support their readiness for a Level I Assessment.

• Day 4-5: Following the 3 clinic days, participants will be assessed over two days with respect to the American Association of Snowboard Instructors Snowboard Certification Standards for Level I.

Snowsports school affiliation is highly recommended, and the training portion of the college can help to prepare those who are not yet employed at a resort or those with limited access to formal training. Participants should arrive prepared to be on snow for five days and able to ride safely on all green and blue terrain. Participants must complete the online Snowboard Level I E-Learning Course prior to registering for the event. For more information about the Certification Standards, Performance Guide, and Assessment Forms, go to the PSIA-AASI Certification Resources.

Learning Experiences:

Specific activities will vary depending on group, terrain, and conditions and typically include:

• Group and individual activities designed to build and assess skill across the entire Learning Connection Model.

• Technical Skills learning experiences may include exercises developing proficiency in Core and Supporting Riding Activities, potentially including practice with accurate self assessment and movement analysis of peers.

• People Skills learning experiences explore the human side of how we deliver and receive information to build custom, collaborative learning environments centered on our students. Potential areas of focus include practicing meaningful verbal and non-verbal communication, delivering feedback that acknowledges the emotions of the group, and encouraging interactions that build positive group dynamics.

• Teaching Skills learning experiences may provide opportunities for participants to practice the Assess and Plan, Implement, and Reflect and Review phases of lessons in the novice zone in the context of group, paired, or individual teaching exercises.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, successful participants will be able to:

• Understand the role of the professional instructor in creating student-centered learning experiences.

• Apply the Learning Connection Model to support skills required for AASI Level I Certification.

• Demonstrate professionalism and self-management while fostering positive group dynamics.

• Communicate effectively through meaningful verbal and non-verbal interactions with individuals and groups.

• Plans, deliver, and review progressive learning experiences that meet agreed-upon outcomes for beginner/novice students.
