Course Description:

SHOW, DON'T TELL

Smartphone Video Coaching for Snowsport Instructors

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Learn how to use smartphone video as a simple, effective coaching tool that helps guests see

what they are doing, connect what they feel with what they actually do, and become more

engaged in their own learning. The course combines video technique, safety, file transfer, and

movement analysis with an emphasis on creating a conversation rather than simply telling the

guest what to change.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of the course, instructors will be able to:

 Explain how visual validation can enhance the guest experience and support retention.

 Safely capture a short, stable video without sacrificing slope awareness.

 Apply the "8 Turns, 8 Seconds" approach to maximize coaching time and minimize

disruption to skiing/riding.

 Transfer high-quality video between different smartphone platforms.

 Use video on the chairlift to facilitate movement analysis through effective, open-ended

questions.

COURSE OUTLINE

1. WHY VIDEO? -- From Perception to Reality

 Experience the gap between what we feel and what we actually do.

 Explore how video validates instructor observations.

 Connect video coaching to guest engagement, improvement, and retention.

 Introduce the 8 Turns, 8 Seconds principle.

2. SAFETY & CAMERA SKILLS

 Safe locations and stationary filming.

 Traffic awareness and camera positioning.

 Permission, privacy, and appropriate handling of guest video.

 Framing, stability, distance, and lens selection.

 Practice creating a clear, useful clip.

3. VIDEO PRACTICE

 Develop camera stability and framing skills through practical drills.

 Practice capturing a complete movement pattern.

 Transfer skills from practice activities to on-snow application.

4. TRANSFERRING VIDEO

 Understand why file quality matters.

 Practice transferring original-quality video between iPhone and Android devices.

 Use AirDrop, iCloud links, cloud storage, or file/document transfer.

 Confirm successful transfer, then delete guest footage from the device.

5. CHAIRLIFT MOVEMENT ANALYSIS -- SHOW, DON'T TELL

 Use video to create a conversation rather than a lecture.

 Scrub and pause video to help guests identify what they see.

 Practice open-ended questions that encourage self-discovery.

 Connect visual evidence to the guest's sensations and goals.

 Validate the guest's observations and establish a focus for the next run.

KEY TAKEAWAY

Video doesn't replace great coaching--it validates it.

Use a short, purposeful clip to help guests see it, understand it, own it, and improve it.
